It all began in Central America in the 70’s with a love story and a pair of jeans.
John Kopplin, a Peace Corps volunteer, was in Costa Rica when he first caught sight of Susana Baltodano at a clothing store across the street. Susana, whose mother was a designer, was destined for the world of fashion. The budding fashionista sold him that pivotal pair of jeans, even though he already had five pairs of new Levi’s in his luggage. John thought “it was a good intro to what eventually was marriage.”
Together they opened the first Maya Palace clothing boutique in 1977 at Sabino Square. A little over a year later they moved the store to El Mercado where it would reside for the next 35 years. At one point Maya Palace could be found at three locations around town. Maya Palace, now located in Plaza Palomino, is the boutique destination for brides, formal events, and unique clothing options. Known for its impeccable customer service and unmatched selection, Maya Palace has been a Tucson staple for decades.
